Shooting over 10 years, directed by the “Best Documentary” award winning director – Mr. YANG Li-chou. “Father” recorded the lost traditional performance art and the craft of Taiwanese Glove Puppetry.
“Father” is an intimate portrait of the Taiwanese glove puppetry (bù daì xì) master Mr. CHEN Hsi-huang. As he and his troupe urge to preserve the Taiwanese traditional performance art and its challenging techniques to the next generation in the modern society.
The Glove Puppetry Master – Mr. CHEN Hsi-huang, inherited the glove puppetry performance art from his father – the legendary Taiwanese Glove Puppetry maestro – Mr. LI Tien-lu, , who past away in the late 90’s. The film discusses the complicated father-son relationship in the traditional society as well as a son trying to escape from his father’s shadow.
A life inseparable from his hand-made glove puppets has become a life inseparable from his father’s legacy. Is he still on the search for himself at the age of 88, while the Taiwanese glove puppetry (bù daì xì) and the puppet theaters are withering in this era of digital entertainment?
